Skippy’s Hotdogs

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Today my dad took me and one of his old friends out to eat at Skippy’s Hot Dogs in downtown Winston-Salem.  I’ve ben there once before but not since this site’s been up!  Skippy’s main attraction is their pretzel recipe they purchased from a Pennsylvania Dutch man who was made famous for his pretzels.  They use this recipe to make their own pretzel dough in house, but they do much more with it than just make plain pretzels.

My personal favorite is the Chicago style hotdog in a grilled pretzel bun.  The bun is a very thick bread, just like a soft pretzel, and it’s grilled briefly to give it a nice crispiness on the inside and out.  The hot dog itself is split open and relish and banana peppers are piled on top.  On one side there’s a tomato slice, and on the other is a quarter of a dill pickle.  All in all, it makes for one really great hot dog.

Skippy’s is also one of the few places I’ve seen outside of Pennsylvania that will sell genuine birch beer, which I love.  If you’ve never had birch beer, it’s a soft drink very similar to root beer, but it’s a bit sharper in flavor.  If you get the chance, buy some!  Every time I take a trip up to Pennsylvania to visit relatives I always buy several bottles of it to take back and enjoy, mostly because it’s just hard to find anywhere outside of that state!

Back in NC

On Wednesday I drove up to North Carolina to spend Christmas/New Years with family and friends.  It’s one heck of a drive, just over 10 hours straight in the car.  I had plenty of caffeine and a good audio book [iTunes link] to keep me awake though.

So far I’ve seen I Am Legend, which I liked a lot.  It had a rather abrupt ending, but overall a good movie.  I’ve just got to do my final Christmas preparations this weekend and I should be all set.  Which reminds me, be sure to try wrapping gifts with a rip cord, it’s a lot cooler than the old way of doing things.

Bat for Lashes

Saturday, December 15, 2007

I just found out about Bat for Lashes tonight via the video below, and I think they’re great.  I just got the whole album Fur and Gold and so far it’s great, it’s some very slow and sometimes haunting trance-like music.  I think I’ve really begun to like a lot of indie female-led bands, I have a quite a few in my music library and I don’t think I noticed that until just now.

Here’s the video for What’s a Girl to do?, it’s very strange and reminiscent of Donnie Darko, but a really well put together video, and from what I hear it’s what most people think is her best song.

Dvorak

I always remember hearing about alternate keyboard layouts and a recent discussion on the Godbit Forum about ergonomics led to the use of the Dvorak simplified keyboard layout which interested me.  So I switched my layout and printed out a set of keys to tape onto my laptop so I can begin to learn it.  So far it’s been very slow (I’m 10 minutes into this post already!), but I’m finding the letter placements intuitive.  I suppose I’m just used to QWERTY now, so I feel like I’m back in 4th grade learning to type again.  Chances are I’ll get tired of this and switch back, but at least it’s something I can say I tried.

(It took about 30 minutes to write all of this!)

Hello World

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Hi, I’m Chris.  I’m a web designer/developer who lives in Panama City, Florida and this is my site.  I co-own a web design company called Eject Media with my good friend and business partner Derek Boggs.  We started Eject Media just over a year and a half ago after I graduated from school and moved up here to Panama City.  It took a while to get a business website for our company online, but we finally managed to do it.  Eject Media used to be just a fake company name I made up when I was in school and I used it for my blog and all kinds of personal projects, but now it’s a real company and I can’t put all that on there anymore which is why this site now exists.

This is the first site I’ve built on top of Expression Engine and it’s had a bit of a steep learning curve, but it’s worth learning.  It seems to be very powerful and easy to use once the site is up and running, and it’s certainly what I plan on building all future sites on.  Leave a comment and let me know if you think anything is broken or needs changing on this site.
